When I think of "my people" "my tribe" what comes to mind are those who inspire me to be the best version of myself, those who motivate me to create, those who make me say, "Wow." In these next few months, I am taking time to take a deeper dive into the lives of the women who inspire greatness in me and in others. I am a true believer that the best gift anyone can give is recognizing and celebrating the gifts in others.
When I first thought of creating this blog series, there was no else else that came to mind first other than Rubi Rios from Rubi Readings and Set In Stone. This Boss Babe is not only a mom of three, but runs her own jewelry line, Set In Stone, and holistic healing company known as Rubi Readings.
Rubi dedicates all of her time in mastering her skills as a Master Reiki healer, psychic-medium, and spiritual guide. She prefers to work with those who need healing, who need direction in their life and most importantly for those who listen to her guidance. Her sole purpose on earth is to help and heal. Rubi believes to have been gifted since a young age but did not accept and practice her gifts until 2011.
Holistic Healing comes in many forms and Rubi seems to be gifted in many different ways. From Reiki to Tarot (or as I like to call it "Intuitive Readings"), to handpicking and cleansing crystals, Rubi offers an array of natural healing methods. In 2018, Rubi introduced a month-long Soul Mentorship program where she exclusively works one-on-one and mentors those who seek guidance with life purpose, releasing fears and/or past issues and those seeking to explore their own gifts. As a Master Reiki, Rubi also offers classes throughout the year to become a certified Level 1 and 2 Reiki practitioner.
When I first met Rubi we had an instant connection. We chatted about how we would change the world through yoga and healing. Rubi and I have worked several events together including Girls Yoga Day , private Tarot and yoga parties and most recently the February 2018 Annette Romo Yoga Retreat in Manzanillo, Mexico. We are set to offer another yoga retreat in Nayarit,Mexico August 31-September 3
I am so excited to be able to tell you a little bit of how Rubi became Rubi Readings!.
Ladies and gentlemen.. Rubi Rios..
How would you describe your gifts?
My gifts range from sensing spirits who have passed away, sensing people’s energies and what they’re going through at the present time, reading tarot through intuitive thoughts and feelings, having the ability to teach and inspire others to utilize their own intuition and healing abilities, healing through Reiki Energy Healing and making customized energy based jewelry with crystals.
How did you get into intuitive readings?
I was at a bar one night and there was a man sitting next to me. I had sensed his best friend who had passed away was standing behind us. I gave him messages about two hours and after our conversation this man was crying and told me how grateful he was to hear the messages I had for him because he had trouble moving on from his death. About a year later I ran into a mutual friend and he had told me that this man had completely changed his life around after our reading at the bar and it was because of what I had told him that made him redirect his path. This made me realize that I was able to change people’s lives but something told me that I had to find a way to help people in their present lives and not so much with people who had crossed over. A friend had mentioned I should consider tarot cards and that’s where the initial interest sparked, however, I wasn’t sure how I could use that as a positive tool because of my religious background and personal fear attached to it.
Can you describe your experience getting your first reading?
My first reading was done through text by a friend in New York. I was contemplating whether to leave my office job at that time and I felt very conflicted because I had three kids. She had advised me that something bigger was coming for me and that I was going to be just fine in leaving a job I was truly unhappy with. I still look back and think how that one text message gave me so much strength and courage to change my life dramatically. It was that text reading that changed it all for me.
Did you know you were gifted? How did you know how to explore your gifts?
It wasn’t until I was about twenty-six years old when I realized something was ‘different’. My friend lived in a house where I felt a presence of a child and I was starting to pick up on the kid’s personality and that he was not a friendly spirit. It was so unsettling for me because every time I would go and visit her I felt uncomfortable being alone in the bathroom. It was then that I realized I had to do something about it. So a friend had given me contact information for a Medium in Los Angeles and so I called her. She told me I was ‘gifted’ and a Medium myself. I had to see myself as a Light and spirits only see light. So spirits naturally gravitate towards the light and linger until they are helped. This opened up a huge door for me because I felt completely lost and all of a sudden I was now in a phase of my life where I like to refer as my “Not Coming Out of the Spiritual Closet”
Exploring my gifts meant exploring it on my own. I was raised Catholic and my entire family was against tarot, crystals, yoga and meditation. All of it was ‘weird’ & considered witchcraft. All I wanted to learn, at that time, was how to control spirits from entering my home, being around spirits in other places. I found a local spot called Cocoon Imports in Downey where I met my favorite person and mentor, Jesse. I would visit his store for hours asking questions on what to do next and he slowly showed me what techniques to do to shield myself from energies as well as pushed me to learn more about my gifts.
Who inspires you?
I like to say I get inspired in categories. It’s so important to me to relate to all people from all walks of life as well as different ages.
Tony Robbins inspires me when it comes to mentoring and teaching others. Jim Carrey inspires me when it comes to manifesting. Will Smith inspires me in the way he speaks and his realistic approach to influencing people of all ages. I also watch Chef Tables on Netflix for business inspiration and authenticity.
When did you decide to make this your career?
While I was on my maternity leave with my youngest son, Ace, I had more free time at home and so I started to do more readings. I had never advertised and all the clients that came in were simply by word of mouth. When I returned back to work I had already developed such a personal relationship with all my clients that I was starting to feel really bad neglecting emails and text messages while I was at work. I was getting home after 6pm and having to play mom and wife at the time that it was more difficult for me to get back to people at decent times. It was then that I started to realize I was putting my clients and the potential to help others last and it just brought the worst feeling in my heart.
Do you prepare before you do your readings? If so, how?
Yes. I take about 15 minutes prior to the reading to get settled and in a very calm state of mind. I turn my phone on silent, I set up all my cards and place my crystals near my cards. I also light some sage to clear the energy and to clear the energy from the cards. I speak out loud to my Angels & Spirit Guides to help direct the reading and ask that whatever the client is meant to hear at this time that the messages be accurate and specific. I also ask that all my energy be protected at all times and that I do not absorb anything.
Do you do readings on yourself? How often?
I do my own readings every single day. It’s mostly oracle cards that I pull because they’re more for overall guidance. I pull one card from each deck I have and use that as my tool for the day, very similar to what I offer for my Instagram followers.
I’m not going to lie and say I don’t pull specific cards when I want to know an answer but most of the times I don’t really get a full answer. There are times when I just need to know what my next move is or something in that nature and I just sit and stare at my cards for the longest time as if it was my very first time reading them, haha. A lot of readers will tell you that it’s quite the task trying to read for yourself because you try to be neutral. I also struggle with thinking I’m trying to see what I want to see.
What are some of the challenges you face?
The biggest challenge that I am faced with right now is having to be a single mom with three kids and trying to run my own business. I am always multitasking and trying to be there for everyone and being a healer takes a lot of work. Your energy has to be right and the people around you have to be energetically okay too. If not, nothing flows. My kids are my priority but so is my business. There are days when everyone is on the same page and I’m all caught up with work but then there are days when things are just not working out. I am also faced with having to stand my ground for the decisions that I make and having to ‘prove’ that I can make it all happen, that usually takes a lot of energy. I am working on having to let that go at the moment and let my hard work speak for itself.
Did you grow up religious?
Yes, I was raised Catholic.
Tarot cards have a stigma in the religious community? Why? Can you be religious and also believe in tarot?
It’s been known for many generations in the Catholic community that Tarot is not to be played with and that they are not to consult psychics. I grew up listening to Walter Mercado (a famous horoscope psychic on TV) and when I was little I remember my grandfather always telling us kids to be quite when Walter started talking about his horoscope sign and then telling us “This isn’t real and nobody should believe in this anyway” It was always funny to us though because he always somehow made it a habit to watch it every day, haha. Growing up with that type of mentality where you aren’t supposed to touch a tarot card or even believe in horoscopes put a huge fear in me. And seeing it in the bible solidified it for me.
The main reason why I believe you can be religious and believe in Tarot is because there is a matter of intention. If you are using tarot to ask malicious questions, questions about death (which I never do) then, yes, you can potentially be opening up portals or unwanted negative energy. But if I am using tarot and connecting to Angels and Spirit Guides to ask for messages to help, inspire, motivate and potentially save somebody’s life then I don’t see how that could possibly be ‘evil’ ‘witchcraft’ or ‘malicious’.
Where do you see your business in 5 years?
In 5 years I see my website expanding. With that being said, I see myself with my own team working to create and spread positivity in whatever ‘creative’ venture I see myself in. I want to have energetic people working with me in hopes to see my Energy Bracelets across the world. I also hope to be guiding more intuitive healers on my team.
I see myself with the ability to constantly travel with my kids so they can see me in action helping people all over the world with my readings, teachings and healings. I don’t believe in reaching the top because there is always more to do. My mind will always find new ideas and my heart will always have the desire to heal, which we all know this world needs a lot of healing.
Describe yourself with three words.
Responsible Free Spirit
BONUS: If you can collaborate with anyone, with whom or what would it be?
To be quite honest, Kate Hudson. I know she’s not your typical spiritual guru but she is a phenomenal human being. I just relate to her so much because she is a mom, free spirit, she loves tarot, and she just goes with the flow. She has a strong impact on wanting to see the world just be happy. Something just tells me her and I would open a whole new door for magical mommies. Working on manifesting that soon, haha!
